Exo-Archaeology #1 – Before Project Sign: The First Pentagon UFO Investigation and the 1947 Gen. Twining Letter

In a previous post I suggested that as an archaeologist and historian I was seeing a major lack of awareness among many people here of the early history of the UFO phenomenon (in it’s modern form). I’ve been talking with a couple of interested professional colleagues of mine about doing a podcast together, revisiting that early history and reexamining it in light of our newer knowledge and situating those events in the appropriate historical context. But first, I thought I might test the waters with a few posts to gauge interest, starting with the famous summer of 1947 and the behind the scenes reaction to the “Flying Saucer” flap within the Pentagon — as best we can get at it with the primary and secondary sources available to us. The modern UFO era did not begin with Roswell as many people think, but with pilot Kenneth Arnold’s famous sighting of nine disk-like objects near Mt. Rainer two weeks earlier on June 24, 1947.
