FotoForensics just received its 5 millionth unique picture upload! (Woo hoo!) As a research platform, we index the uploaded pictures and tag them for specific research uses. Often, we come across patterns among the uploads. Some patterns are associated with content, while others are associated with tools or techniques. To celebrate the “5 Million!” milestone, I thought I should share one of the findings with the community. There is a specific alteration technique that I’ve been watching since 2015. The pictures stand out from the typical UFO and cat photos because of the content and alteration approach. These images typically show a room full of people watching some kind of PowerPoint presentation. However, the PowerPoint slide in the photos has been digitally altered. Sometimes it has been replaced with a sharper version of the same content, while other times it shows a completely different slide. The alteration stands out because the technique is not just a simple cut-n-paste. (I’m not going to detail the technique’s signature here, but it is very distinct and unusual.)
