MONOLOGUE WRITTEN BY CLYDE LEWIS Yesterday as I was eating in a restaurant, I heard a waitress say to some customers that were leaving “Have a great holiday weekend.” It was peculiar and then I remembered that today was Columbus Day. Some big holiday — and excuse for the Feds to take the day off and a day set aside to argue over whether or not Columbus and his merry band of explorers did more damage to the indigenous peoples than good. There is that old saying ” In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue,” bringing to the New World a bounty of wonder: coffee, horses, turnips, grapes, wine. But Columbus and his fellow explorers, in addition to bringing crops and animals we now take for granted, were also the Typhoid Marys of their time. The New World before Columbus: no typhoid, no flu, no smallpox, no measles. The New World after Columbus: epidemics of death. Yes, Columbus was an invader of sorts and brought with him diseases that were unknown to the inhabitants of the New World.
