Allen Hynek’s classification system. An astronomer back in the 1940s Hynek advised the US military on high-profile alien investigations. His classification system is as follows:  1.  Close Encounters of the First Kind: A simple UFO sighting  One of the first reported UFO sightings came in 1947 by an amateur pilot named Kenneth Arnold. Calculating the size of the object he saw with the sun he estimated it to be too big to be an airplane. He also noted its speed at 1700 km per hour, faster than anything alive at that point. He reported the UFO as “saucer-like”, which gave the UFO its disc shape in popular media. 2.  Close Encounters of the Second Kind: a UFO sighting with physical proof  Not much later a man named George Adamanski (opens in new tab) gave photo evidence of his encounter.
