Encyclopedia Brown and the Tripwire

Further to the discussion below, an attempt at a definition. Since the Left has ruined the term “trigger,” in the below post I used the term “tripwire” to name that moment where you realize that the story you’re being told doesn’t add up. That happens all the time, of course, but the main reason I think we need to settle on a term is that “the tripwire” (again, provisionally, and for lack of a better one) just comes on you out of the blue. If I’m at the used car lot, for instance, I’m on my guard, because I know what’s what. I expect the salesman to put the best possible light on things, because that’s his job. Similarly, I know for certain that everything on the “news” is a lie, so I naturally greet everything presented with maximum skepticism. But why did my hippie-wannabe professor’s Woodstock story trip me up? What was the giveaway? That’s what I want to find out. Again making all possible allowances for my excessive naivete then, my excessive jadedness now (thanks, Clown World!), and all the memory distortion of thirty years, I really think the guy thought he was telling the truth.
