A common refrain you hear about things like UFO and bigfoot sightings, etc., is something like, “Funny how everyone has a cell phone camera in their pocket but you never see good photos of these things!” But as someone who’s been a professional photographer among my other work for the past dozen years or so, I can tell you it’s not that easy to get a good photo, especially with a smart phone and especially on the fly when something unexpected happens. Even with a telephoto lens and a $3,000 camera body, and even when expecting it to happen, it can be tough getting good clear shots of fighter jets doing flyovers in full daylight. Now turn that expensive camera into a smart phone, and make it something unexpected like a UFO — much farther away than a fighter jet as well — and make it at night. It’d be almost impossible to shoot that, and even if you captured it the images would just be little blobs of light (which is usually what people get nowadays).
